Lib Dems plunge new depths in Cheriton

The Lib Dems will, no doubt, do their best to put a positive spin on last night's by election result. They won a seat on Folkestone Town Council - but is it really the local resurgence they had promised? Their candidate, with 504 votes, won with fewer votes than any other Cheriton councillor in my lifetime. Even during the toilets and tax crisis of 2004, the Lib Dems managed 598 votes. In fact, this ward is the safest and longest standing Lib Dem ward in Folkestone. In 2003 they polled an incredible 84% of the vote. Cllr Prater's mere 41% will be miserable viewing for the local Lib Dem elite. Faced with being reduced to a rump of less than a dozen councillors at the next election, even their leader Lynne "Bonker" Beaumont must fear for the safety of her traditionally marginal seat.

Cheriton By Election Result

The results of the Cheriton By-election are as follows:-

People First - 262 - 21.69%

Roy Edey - Impeach Blair, Troops out of Iraq - 18 - 1.49%

David Johnson - Conservative - 294 - 24.34%

Liberal Democrat - 504 - 41.72% - Elected

Go Folkestone - 126 - 10.43%

Spoilt papers 4

Percentage Turnout 28.6%

Commenting on the result, Bob Davidson the local Conservative Party Agent said, "I would like to thank David Johnson and the many members who worked on the campaign.

"At first glance you would have thought the Shepway Liberal Democrats did quite well until you think back to 2003, the last time the Liberal Democrats won anything other than the odd Town Council seat, when the Liberal Democrats got 84% of the vote in this seat. This time they only got half that figure - hardly something they can be proud of."

Michael to resign

Michael Howard announced at last night's AGM that he intends to stand down as the MP for Folkestone & Hythe at the next general election. This was, of course, sad news to local Conservative Party members, as we have grown extremely fond of both Michael and Sandra over the last 23 years that they have represented us. Michael has been an excellent MP, flighting tirelessly for local residents. Whoever replaces Michael will have a tough act to follow.
