Budget Meeting

Tonight's Finance and General Purposes Committee budget meeting agreed a precept for 2005/2006 with an increase of just under 10% on this year's budget. The figure is one which I consider to be unacceptably high, but it is clear that the majority of members of the council strongly support the proposals. The budget will not be adopted formally until the January full council meeting, prior to which the Conservative group will have to decide whether to publish an alternative programme. Given that it seems unlikely that the majority will support a tax freeze (the Conservative's preferred option) it seems probable that any changes will be minor and will relate to the priorities for the year ahead rather than the total size of the budget.
